Street for a School
Street for a School inserts a new space for engagement, meeting and collective activity in a 1980’s school building. The project builds uses the logic the street, by connecting a series of interior and exterior rooms using two continuous open spaces. The boundaries between classroom and in-between space is deliberately blurred at specific instances, providing a flexible domain for the pupils and teachers. Two large blocks divide the two wings, providing storage and functionality, including an open kitchen that forms the heart of the school, frame the intersection of the axes. Aside from a climatological upgrades, the façade is enriched with a steel mesh band in the school’s signature colour yellow; a new ribbon around a school that sits at the centre of the community.
