Profile
MORE WITH LESS
Studio Nauta has been shaping its architectural practice since 2012, focused on creating a future-proof built environment. The studio challenges conventional methods by advocating for low-tech solutions, emphasising the reuse of existing structures and materials, biobased construction techniques, and long-term sustainability. Its goal is to achieve more with less, upholding architectural integrity without compromise.
LOW-TECH, HOLISTIC AND MULTIFACETED APPROACH
Based in Rotterdam, Studio Nauta engages in projects that contribute meaningfully to both society and the field of architecture. Its portfolio spans a variety of scales and typologies, from residential and educational buildings to infrastructure, urban design, and research. The office is defined by its holistic approach, in which topics such as climate management, structural design, landscape, and mechanical engineering are treated as interconnected, overseeing each project from concept to final detail.
CRAFTSMANSHIP IN ARCHITECTURE
Rejecting nostalgia, Studio Nauta views architecture as a craft, with a firm commitment to hands-on making throughout the design process. Its buildings are not just physically sustainable—they are also socially and spatially responsible, integrating both environmental and community considerations. By building on the inherent qualities of each site, Studio Nauta ensures its projects are deeply rooted in their cultural context, avoiding placelessness.
RECOGNITION
Studio Nauta has earned significant recognition, including the Abe Bonnema Prize for Young Architects, the Vredeman de Vries Prize, being the only Dutch office featured in the Wallpaper Architects Directory 2018, and a nomination for Architect of the Year in 2024.
